Keep America BeautifulKeep America Beautiful presents Recycle Bowl, a national K-12 competition between schools to invigorate student participation in recycling efforts. The competition runs from October 15 to November 15, 2018. Through Recycle-Bowl, Keep America Beautiful hopes to excite students and improve recycling in elementary, middle and high schools across America.

Recycle-Bowl

The Recycle-Bowl competition has three division categories (School, Community, and District Divisions) allowing schools to compete where they fit best. The Recycle-Bowl also features a non-competitive, “Open Division” that is less formal and accommodates schools that register late.

Water-Wise Village Challenge
Oct 15 2018 – Apr 15 2019 all-day

Pledge to turn off your sprinkler system for the winter.

Turfgrass, particularly St. Augustine, naturally goes dormant during winter months and uses all available energy to grow and strengthen the root system. Allowing grass to brown during the cool months results in healthier lawns with less disease in the spring.

Once you pledge, your village earns a point in the contest! Villages with the most points will receive cash awards for their scholarship funds from program sponsors.

Pledge between August 15 and December 31 and earn Two Points.

Learn how to submit your pledge at thewoodlandstownship-tx.gov.

Nurture Nature Series: Reptiles @ Baytown Nature Center, Tracey's Theater
Nov 4 @ 10:00 am – 12:00 pm

Beneficial or harmful? Scary or shy? Reptiles are one of the most interesting and often misunderstood classifications of animals on Earth. Baytown Nature Center Naturalist, Crissy Butcher leads November’s Nurture Nature Series with a fascinating discussion of these ancient creatures. Learn their characteristics, evolutionary history, and defense mechanisms. Find out if snakes are slimy; if turtles can crawl out of their shells, how alligators, caimans, and crocodiles are different; or if all lizards have legs. Participants will have the chance to observe and touch live examples of three of the four orders of reptiles, including snakes, lizards, alligators, and turtles.

The hands-on, family-oriented series, offered the first Saturday of each month is free with regular admission to the nature center. The popular program is from 10 am-12 noon on the first Saturday of each month, except April, when the nature center hosts its Nurture Nature Festival.  Enjoy a fun, education morning; then stay to picnic, bird, hike, fish or just relax – a great way to spend a morning.
