Houston Environmental News Update November 14, 2018

On Thursday, November 15, 2018, we celebrate America Recycles Day, an initiative of Keep America Beautiful, which offers a wealth of information on improving recycling here. The organization notes that the national rate of recycling over the past three decades, and now stands at 34 percent.
Likewise, the greater Houston region has made great strides in enhancing recycling services, but obviously, we all can do more. Some resources that may be of interest include:

CEC NOTES

Craft Beer and Craft Salad Experiential Dinners

CEC is partnering with Snappy Salads, an eco-loyal company with a mission to leave this world healthier than the way they found it, and Karbach Brewery for two private Craft Beer and Craft Salad Experimental Dinners this week. The second will be Thursday, Nov. 15 at the Snappy Salads Galleria area location, 1920 Fountain View Drive (see eventbrite.com). Each event is limited to 40 people. All proceeds from ticket sales will benefit CEC.


Houston Green Film Series: Living the Change

Please join CEC, the Houston Green Film Series, the Rice Media Center, and additional partners on Nov. 28, 2018, for Living the Change.

The film explores solutions to the global crises we face today – solutions any one of us can be part of – through the inspiring stories of people pioneering change in their own lives and in their communities in order to live in a sustainable and regenerative way. (Watch the trailer).

  1. The University of Houston and environmental nonprofits release report on transportation emissions
    Researchers at the University of Houston, working with the advocacy group Public Citizen, part of the Healthy Port Communities Coalition, recently released a report titled “Evaluation of the air quality impacts of clean combustion technologies, emissions controls and fleet electrification in the Houston Metropolitan Area for the year 2040.” The report notes that the 8-county region’s population is expected to grow by 50 percent by 2040, and on-road vehicle traffic, including trucks and passenger vehicles, is predicted to increase by 30-80 percent. The study concludes that fleet electrification and new technologies can improve regional air quality and human health endpoints. See coverage of the report from Houston Public Media.
  2. “Eco-Ology” on KPFT @ 90.1 FM
    Every Thursday from 3-4 p.m., KPFT 90.1 FM airs Eco-Ology, co-hosted by Pat Greer and HC Clark, featuring conversations with solution-based citizens from a variety of environmentally-related organizations, focusing on ecological issues and their interdependent relationships. Eco-Ology welcomes ecologists, economists, environmentalists, religious and spiritual leaders, peace givers, progressives, conservatives, liberals – everyone who is deeply entrenched in living now and believes a healthy future is possible.
  3. State of the Air High School Essay Contest
    Air Alliance Houston is holding an essay contest for high school students to describe their vision of clean air and a healthy environment in Houston. Selected students will receive scholarships, and the first-place winner will receive an invitation to speak at the 2019 State of the Air event. The deadline for entries is Nov. 16, 2018.   4. Regional Recycling Roundtable
    On Nov. 15, 2018, from 10 a.m.-noon, the Houston-Galveston Area Council will host a Regional Recycling Roundtable at its offices, 3555 Timmons Lane. The topic will be composting as a recycling strategy. Presentations will include: trends and status in commercial composting, a municipality case study, and a master composter overview. For more information and to register, visit h-gac.com.
  5. Center for Houston’s Future Dinner and Conversation
    On Nov. 15, 2018, the Center for Houston’s Future will host a special Dinner an Conversation with award-winning Texas authors Lawrence Wright and Mimi Swartz, who will discuss the joys and frustrations, challenges, and thrills of covering the Lone Star State.   6. Keep Pearland Beautiful Annual Meeting and Awards Dinner
    On Nov. 15, 2018, from 6:30-8:30 p.m., Keep Pearland Beautiful will celebrate another year of providing quality environmental programs in Pearland. Guest speaker Shanna Lopez of Waste Management will address the State of Recycling.   7. Roktko Chapel Interfaith Thanksgiving – “Care for Creation”
    On Nov. 15, 2018, Rothko Chapel will host the the 34th Annual Houston Interfaith Thanksgiving Service, in which leaders and members of nine different faith communities across the city will come together to share prayers, readings, chants and reflections on the theme of “care for creation.” This is in preparation for the 2019 Rothko Chapel Symposium on Climate Change, Feb. 28-March 2, 2019.   8. Our Great Region Awards applications open through November 16
    The Houston-Galveston Area Council’s Our Great Region Awards recognize outstanding projects in the region that advance the goals and strategies identified in the Our Great Region 2040 plan. The application period is open through Nov. 16, 2018. Any plans, programs, projects or policies that have implemented a strategy of the Our Great Region 2040 plan within the 13-county region in the past four years are eligible.   9. Volunteer at Martin Bailey Garden Project at Wisdom High School
    Vox Culture and Houston E-Club Chapter of Rotary International have partnered to develop a creative garden model that addresses the needs of students at Wisdom High School. They are seeking volunteers to help plant seeds and seedlings in raised beds on November 17, 2018 from 9 a.m.-1 p.m.. No experience is necessary, since there will be instructions provided on-site.   10. Kingwood B.O.P.A. and Electronics Collection event
    On Nov. 17, 2018, from 9 a.m.-1 p.m., the City of Houston’s Solid Waste Management Department will collect batteries, oil, paint (latex only) and antifreeze (B.O.P.A.), large appliances, electronics, and scrap metal at the Metro Park & Ride, 3210 W.   11. McGovern Centennial Gardens Volunteer Orientation
    On Nov. 17, 2018, from 9:30-10:30 a.m., the Hermann Park Conservancy will host an orientation for prospective volunteers at the McGovern Centennial Gardens. Following the orientation, there will be a short tour of the Gardens. For more information and to register, visit hermannpark.org.
  12. BBP’s Nature Walking Tour
    On
    Nov. 17, 2018, 10:30-11:30 a.m., the Buffalo Bayou Partnership will host a free walking tour, highlighting the landscape and ecology of 19th Century Texas that created Houston, as well as the importance of prairies in rebuilding this astonishing and all-but-vanished ecosystem.   13. Rice Design Alliance Gala Honoring Harris County Judge Ed Emmett
    On Nov. 17, 2018, from 7 p.m.-midnight, the Rice Design Alliance will hold its 2018 Gala recognizing Harris County Judge Ed Emmett with the Award for Design Excellence as an exceptional leader of our region.   14. Interfaith Environmental Stewardship Event at Japhet Creek Park
    On Nov. 18, 2018, from 1:30-4:30 p.m., the Interfaith Environmental Network of Houston and its partner congregations will hold an hands-on environmental stewardship at Japhet Creek Park. The event will offer activities for all ages and skill levels.   15. Memorial Park 101: Soil 101
    On Nov. 20, 2018, from 6-7:30 p.m., the Memorial Park Conservancy will host “Soil 101,” in which soil expert Dany Millikin will explore the intersections of park maintenance and conservation with a close-up look at a commercial-scale composting operation.
