CEC: The Voice of the Environmental Community

cecnewslettermontageThe mission of the Citizens’ Environmental Coalition is to foster dialogue, education, and collaboration on environmental issues in the Houston/Gulf Coast region. We connect concerned citizens and community leaders with over 130 diverse organizations dedicated to improving Houston’s quality of life.

Each of these CEC member groups plays a critical role in carrying out our mission. In turn, our wide-ranging publications amplify the voice of these committed environmental advocates.

The online newsletter, Houston Environmental News Update, reaches almost 5,000 people a week, presenting such vital information as green job opportunities, notes on upcoming events sponsored by area environmentalists, and the latest in environmental news. This unique publication–the only one of its kind in Houston–keeps readers like you up to date on a wealth of environmental issues and activities.rgcovermontage

Our acclaimed annual publication, the Environmental Resource Guide, offers an in-depth profile–including programs, events, and publications–of each CEC member group. Published for almost three decades, it is widely regarded as an indispensable reference for any environmentally concerned citizen or organization, providing background and contact information for dozens of experts in the environmental community. The Resource Guide comes in two handy formats–online and printed–with the latter version being sent each year to local teachers, community and environmental leaders, public officials, and members of the media.

Our other published materials include messages from the CEC posted on our website; regular social media communications on environmental topics; an environmental policy platform; and a periodic State of the Environment report, which details progress on major environmental issues.  In addition, a wealth of historic CEC publications and documents–going back to our founding, in 1971, and even earlier–are available for viewing, at two locations:

  • The Houston Metropolitan Research Center, in the Julia Ideson Building of the Houston Public Library’s Central Branch (contains materials from the late 1960s to 1980)
  • The Houston History Archives, at the Central Campus of the University of Houston (contains materials from the late 1960s to 2010)

With our broad array of publications, both current and historic, the CEC provides unlimited opportunities for readers, member organizations, and researchers alike to collaborate on initiatives to promote a healthier environment throughout the Houston/Gulf Coast region.
