The Coalition for Environment, Equity, and Resilience (CEER) is hiring its first Community Engagement Coordinator to cover the Upper Texas Gulf Coast and Texas’s 2019 legislative session. CEER brings together advocacy, social justice and education groups from three main constituencies: environmental justice, affordable housing, and conservation. To ensure a more equitable and resilient future for our region, these main constituencies developed an 8-point plan to guide recovery efforts and infrastructure spending after Hurricane Harvey.
The position is funded for one year at this time and primary duties span community organizing and communications to ensure that CEER’s advocacy campaigns are effectively implemented and policy priorities are articulated to the general public, elected officials, as well as various non-profit partners. The Community Engagement Coordinator will be an employee of the Gulf Restoration Network, the fiscal program sponsor for CEER, and report to the Coalition Director in developing and furthering the policy and community organizing principles of the coalition.
The new Community Engagement Coordinator should be:
passionate about ensuring a healthy environment for all, including both the natural and built worlds within the urban and suburban context;
a strategic thinker who can assist with the development and implementation of policy
campaigns to advance CEER’s 8-point plan;
a leader that understands the importance of community involvement in campaigns;
a great communicator who can build relationships with both grassroots and grasstop
a leader who is driven by equity and social justice;
able to manage projects with multiple deadlines and work both independently and as a part of team that includes CEER staff and Steering Committee, consultants, member
organizations and other community partners;
someone with a great sense of humor.
The Community Engagement Coordinator will be responsible for overseeing community building efforts and field organizing related to CEER’s programmatic initiatives. The Community Engagement Coordinator will craft and implement a community engagement plan to advance CEER’s advocacy campaigns. In addition, the Community Engagement Coordinator is charged with coordinating and promoting 4-6 townhalls that aim to advance CEER’s policy objectives.
The Community Engagement Coordinator will also perform some communications duties. This includes serving as the primary liaison with communications consultants, maintaining our social media presence, as well as promoting various events and publications throughout the year.Working with the Coalition Director and the Steering Committee of CEER, our new Community Engagement Coordinator will work in partnership with outside communications consultants to develop lasting narratives around the 8-point plan.
The applicant should have 2-3 years of community organizing or community
engagement experience with a strong record of integrating meaningful community
engagement in campaigns for social change or other community engagement efforts
(preferably in Texas)
Strong public speaking skills and ability to build meaningful relationships with a diverse set of stakeholders
Strong organizational abilities and experience managing campaigns, projects or
initiatives with multiple deadlines
Government affairs or advocacy skills to engage with elected official and agency staff
members; a willingness to work with governmental entities as well as advocate for
changes in policy
Demonstrated understanding of communications frameworks for multi-month or multi- year campaigns
Ability to help craft clear messages that explain local, state or federal decision points to a diverse set of stakeholders including elected officials, the media and the public
Experience managing volunteers and consultants preferred, including crafting a scope of work and managing performance-based contracts
Skills to leverage media relationships to advance campaigns
A strong understanding of the environmental and/or civil rights movements is preferred but not required
Fluency in Spanish is preferred but not required
High school diploma required, bachelor’s degree or higher preferred
Main Job Responsibilities:
Create and manage the implementation of a community engagement plan for CEER in partnership with outside communications consultants
Plan, coordinate, and conduct at least 4-6 town hall events in 2019
Establish and maintain relationships with various organizations and decision-makers
throughout various levels of government and in multiple coastal counties; utilize those
relationships to advance identified policy initiatives or goals
Manage external facing communications platforms such as social media, newsletters
and other publications
Coordinate opportunities for Coalition Director to speak to the media and the public
Report to the Coalition Director and work closely with her and the Steering Committee to seek their involvement in framing narratives, and publishing written materials
Collaborate with volunteers, governmental entities, and a broad array of peer non-
profits and coalitions to advance CEER’s advocacy campaigns
Salary and Benefits:
The salary range is approximately $45,000-$55,000 depending on experience. This position is grant funded and dependent upon future fundraising after one year.
