Environmental Headlines for the Houston Region: March 20, 2015

  1. The Buffalo Bayou Partnership Wants to Take You Underground (Brandon Zech – Glasstire, 3/16/2016)
“Houston’s Buffalo Bayou has been undergoing a major renovation for the past few years. Along with new and improved walking trails, community gathering spaces, and a nature park, the Buffalo Bayou Partnership has been commissioning artists to create public art along a ten mile stretch of the bayou. We reported last year that Donald Lipski was commissioned by the partnership to build a periscope designed to peer down into a recently rediscovered, huge, decommissioned drinking water reservoir. Well, now the Buffalo Bayou Partnership wants to go one step further—they are currently searching for college students to act as “Park Cistern Attendants” to give tours of the deserted space.”

  2. Report: High Arsenic Levels in Many Texans’ Water (Kiah Collier – The Texas Tribune, 3/14/2016)
“Tens of thousands of Texans live in places where the drinking water contains toxic levels of arsenic — a known carcinogen — and the state isn’t doing enough to discourage them from consuming it, according to a new report from an environmental group. Analyzing state data posted online, the Washington D.C.-based Environmental Integrity Project found that 34 rural drinking water systems serving about 51,000 Texans have exceeded the federal drinking water limit for arsenic for at least a decade — many by a long shot.”

  3. AAH Serves on Mayor’s Transition Team Committee on Public Health (Leticia Ablaza – airCurrent News, 3/15/2016)
“Over the past several weeks, I have had the honor of serving as an Air Alliance Houston representative on Mayor Sylvester Turner’s Public Health Committee. After Mayor Turner was elected, his transition team saw a need for AAH to have a seat at the table to better assist in bringing environmental and air quality concerns to the Mayor’s attention… Last Friday, the 13-member committee presented to the Mayor our recommendations on how the city can better utilize for profit and non profit organizations to achieve the community’s health goals. Mayor Turner was happy to see that we revamped the “Go Healthy Houston” campaign to include environmental issues, particularly air quality, into the current model to tackle obesity in our communities. Communities must be able to get outdoors and be mobile without fear of breathing toxic air into our lungs. In addition to good nutrition and healthier options, citizens must be able to keep a healthy heart rate with safe, healthful outdoor activity.”
