  1. Adopt a Turtle Nest for Mother’s Day. Sea Turtle Restoration Project’s Adopt-A-Nest program benefits nesting beach protection projects in the Gulf of Mexico and Costa Rica, where volunteers monitor nesting sea turtles and their eggs, making sure that as many hatchlings as possible survive and return to the sea. $45 Adopt A Nest package includes: Personalized adoption certificate, sea turtle window decal, sea turtle fact sheets, “Save the Sea Turtles” sticker, “Sea Turtles of the World” 16″x24″ color poster, “Viva La Tortuga” newsletter, color photograph of sea turtle hatchlings.   2. The 2012 United Way Board Fair. The 2012 United Way Board Fair seeks to connect area nonprofits with a broad spectrum of interested candidates looking for ways to connect with nonprofit organizations in a meaningful way. The fair will take place on May 24th from 5-6:30pm at United Way (50 Waugh Drive). For an organization to participate, an application must be filled out and submitted by May 11th. Space is limited.   3. Acres for America. Acres for America is a partnership between Walmart Stores, Inc. and the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation. The Acres for America program was established to provide funding for projects that conserve important habitat for fish, wildlife, and plants through acquisition of interest in real property. The goal of the program is to offset the footprint of Walmart’s domestic facilities on at least an acre by acre basis through these acquisitions. Preproposals are accepted annually on June 1st.   4. Monthly Prairie Chicken Tours. The Attwater Prairie Chicken National Wildlife Refuge is now offering free van tours of the refuge on the first Saturday of each month. More information at www.fws.gov or on the flyer.
  5. The Shell Marine Habitat Program (SMHP). The Shell Marine Habitat Program (SMHP) is designed to support conservation and restoration activities that result in measurable benefits to key species and their habitats along the coast of the Gulf of Mexico. Funding will be focused on the following issues: oyster conservation and restoration, coastal shorebirds and water birds, and sea turtles. Pre-proposals are due June 15th.   6. Climate Change in My Backyard – Call for Photos. Texas was greatly affected last year by the most severe drought in recorded history. The wildfires wiped out over 3 illion acres of land and displaced thousands of people. Crops died out leaving many farmers jobless and jacking up food prices. Do you agree that climate change is not all the way across the globe but in our backyard? Submit a photo that tells the story of what climate change is already doing to the planet and its people.   7. Reserve a Table for the Houston Peace Festival. The Houston Peace Festival will take place on May 26th from 1-7pm on the grounds of the Live Oak Friends Meeting House (1318 W. 26th St.). The Peace Festival is a day of celebration and networking with local and national organizations working to improve our community. Festival organizers are currently seeking organizations that are interested in reserving a table for the event. Send an email to peacefestvendors@gmail.com by May 10th to make the reservation.
  8. 25th Annual Houston Art Car Parade. The largest Art Car Parade in the world will be running along Allen Parkway, from Waugh Drive to Bagby Street along Buffalo Bayou on May 12th. The parade is part of Art Car Weekend, the Orange Show’s largest annual outreach program, a vehicle for the message that art is an integral part of everyone’s everyday life. Buffalo Bayou Partnership will be participating in this year’s event. Stop by car #34 during the line-up (11am-1pm) and receive native plant seeds and a Buffalo Bayou field guide.   9. TV: Texas Parks & Wildlife. Broadcast on KUHT Channel 8 at 3:00 PM each Saturday and on cable channels in Baytown, Deer Park, Seabrook, and on HCC. More info on the TPWD website (* indicates a segment about the Houston area). This week’s broadcast will include:
